Tap into Recycling!
or
Santa Margarita Water District Goes Green!
Santa
Margarita Water District unveils new program
to help protect the environment.
Santa Margarita Water
District (SMWD) takes pride in the high quality of tap water
supplied to the District’s 154,000 residents; tap water is safe,
reliable and very cost effective. SMWD developed a bottled water
program aimed with a conservation message supplying SMWD’s tap water
to local service, youth and non-profit organizations for use at
events.
Did you know that half of
all water bottles produced in California are not recycled, instead
ending up in our landfill system? In analyzing their bottled water
program, SMWD has determined that all the waste contributed to
landfills is simply too costly to our environment! Therefore, SMWD
is ending its current bottled water program.
Alternative programs are
now being developed for local youth, service and non-profit
organizations that will reduce or eliminate the impact to the
environment yet still serve these groups.
The focus of the new
program is to educate customers: bottled water contains no real
health benefits, and it costs so much more! Consider that a 16
ounce bottle of water typically costs about $1… yet SMWD provides
nearly 750 GALLONS of water to your home for the same price. When
you add the cost of the water and the cost to the environment, the
numbers just don’t add up!
Check back soon for new
ways that you can educate, hydrate, eliminate the waste, and help
our environment!
