The largest of the District's signature events is Water Awareness Day, presented annually in the month of May, in honor of Water Awareness Month. Water Awareness Day is a family fun event designed to educate our community on important issues such as water supply and reliability, conservation and urban runoff prevention. Festivities include crafts and activities for children, water conservation and gardening tips, music, free refreshments and more.
For the past three years the event has taken place at the Upper Oso Reservoir, which has presented an opportunity for residents to learn more about the important role that the reservoir plays in local supply reliability and the lake management plan.
A thriving garden brightens any home - and saving water and money while improving your yard is a sure way to bring a smile to your face.
As part of SMWD's Operation Conservation program, a series of free Home Gardeners Workshops are available to SMWD customers to assist in reducing outdoor water usage. Classes are scheduled on Tuesday evenings and are taught through a series of slides, hands-on demonstrations and displays at the District's office at 26111 Antonio Parkway in Rancho Santa Margarita. Refreshments will be provided and classes are limited to 50 attendees.
Four classes are typically presented in the spring and summer: California Native Plants; Landscape Sprinkler Systems; Soil, Watering and Fertilizing.
