Attend a Free Home Gardeners Workshop

Are you eager to spruce up your gardens with California native and drought friendly plants?

Mark your calendar to attend the 2012 Home Gardeners Workshops. These workshops are designed to help SMWD customers to reduce their outdoor water usage – and save money - by using California native plants and practicing efficient sprinkler management.

Classes are held on Tuesday evenings and are taught through a series of hands-on demonstrations and displays at the District’s office at 26111 Antonio Parkway in Rancho Santa Margarita.

California Native Plants

6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Learn about 25 attractive, readily-available plants that are drought tolerant, and find out which plants work best in the garden. Selected clippings of various plants will be on display and a book with useful information about each of the plants will be available.

One of the highlights of this class will be an announcement regarding an upcoming SmartTimer Giveaway Program. A limited number of SmartTimers will be given away to SMWD customers in 2012. To learn more about the giveaway please join us for the February 28 class.

Landscape Sprinkler Systems

Examine the major design and maintenance principles of both overhead (pop-up) sprinklers and drip systems. Learn more about California’s water supply, types of drip irrigation systems and maintenance for sprinkler systems. A variety of sprinklers will also be on display.

Soils, Watering & Fertilizing

6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Learn about the optimal sprinkler run times and how soil conditions affect plant growth and watering. Determine how to select the appropriate fertilizer and how to conduct a simple irrigation system test on lawn areas using coffee cups. Control clocks (timers) will also be available for instruction on programming.
